Students start learning to read in Reception. They accumulate words in our ‘Word Tins’ during the year. These are key sight words that they learn to recognise, which enable them to construct sentences and to read a selection of books, thus building their confidence in literacy. The children take books home each day to read with their parents.
They learn to recognise all initial and final consonant sounds and short vowel sounds in speech and writing and link the sounds to their letter names. This helps them to ‘sound out’ and read unknown words by putting these sounds together. Of course they also learn how to write letters neatly.
