Dear Parents and Staff,
The 2016/2017 Headmasters’ Football Cup final games were played last Saturday, the 10th of June at Stadium CIS. Both the CIS boys and girls teams qualified along with Lagos Preparatory School Ikoyi and Chrisland School VGC.
In the boys’ final game, Team CIS started out on the offensive, giving the crowd present plenty to cheer about. It did not take long before the visiting team were pressured into scoring an own goal, courtesy of a long throw-in by CIS Captain Ugo Freeley, thus making the game 1-0 in favour of CIS. The goal tally should have doubled before the half time but the goalkeeper for Lagos Prep. was in great shape and was quite outstanding.
The second half started with Team CIS pushing for a second goal but due to poor communication they allowed a slip from their attack which their opponents quickly turned into the much needed counter attack. This eventually resulted in the equalizer. With the game at 1-1, the rain became heavier, which caused the pitch to become water logged.
The referee, however, refused to abandon the game, even though player visibility was affected. Team CIS kept the pressure on but luck was simply not on their side as the goals refused to flow. Another communication breakdown led to a second break from the visitors. This resulted in another goal for Lagos Prep. All efforts to turn the game round proved abortive and shortly after the referee ended the game by blowing the final whistle.
CIS girls team, having watched the boys play their game, were highly agitated before their game started. It is was not surprising to see them take the game to Chrisland School VGC right from the early seconds and scored 4 goals in a matter of as many minutes. The four goals were scored by Kayinsola, Kamsi and Ebruvwiyoroghene (2 goals).
In the second half, CIS pushed for more goals but the wet turf made this a Herculean task. The visitors however were able to score a consolation goal shortly before the final whistle making the game end at 4-1 in favour of CIS.
The silver medals were presented to boys team while the girls team received the gold medals and the winning trophy
