CIS once again hosted the AISEN U-9 Mixed football tournament last weekend. This competition is always an opportunity to showcase our young boys and girls in this age group category, and to see them perform against other international schools in Nigeria.
There were twelve international schools in attendance playing in two groups.
CIS was in Group A where they played 5 matches; won 3 and drew 2 to top the group with 11 points without conceding any goals, while LPS was second with 9 points. In Group B, St Saviour’s came top and was followed by Greensprings Lekki in second position.
The semi final games saw CIS playing against Greensprings in a very intense encounter and both teams could only be separated by penalty spot kicks after full-time had been played. Unfortunately, CIS missed a penalty making it possible for Greensprings to win 3-2. In the other semi final game, St Saviour’s defeated LPS by 1-0 which took them to the final against Greensprings Lekki.
Team CIS, now playing for the third place game, were totally dominant against LPS. Wonderful strikes from Mayowa Oni, Dara Ogunye and Tamilore Fayinka soared majestically towards the LPS goal but their goalkeeper kept them out. However, as time marched on and penalty shoot-out looks like a probable option, Maryam Modibbo, against all the odds, powered home a wonderful shot for the first goal. Team CIS not relenting in their efforts now forced a corner kick, which Nathan Hammond delivered as an ‘in-swinger’ causing the defender for LPS to score an own goal and the score line to end at 2-0 for CIS.
Well done to all our players and many, many thanks to the massive support from Parents.
