It was also an honour for CIS to host the Prince who graced the occasion of the International Award for Young People also known as the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) family gathering. This brought together students from several schools in Lagos and neighbouring states. As the Patron of the DofE Awards, the Prince came to see the progress of the programme in this part of the world. It was an opportunity for him to interact with participating students as well as see their exhibitions to know how the programme is impacting their lives as young people. The DofE equips young people for life. It is the world’s leading achievement award for young people age 14 to 24.
The Award provides a voluntary, non-competitive, non-formal educational framework which challenges young people to develop new skills, get physically active, learn about teamwork and leadership through adventurous journeys as well as volunteer within their community.
The award currently operates in over 130 countries and territories, and it goes by different names in different countries. In Nigeria, Chrysalis Youth Foundation is registered under the laws of Nigeria as a not-for-profit non-governmental organisation dedicated to youth development, is licensed by the London-based Duke of Edinburgh’s International Foundation to implement the Award under the approved name The International Award for Young People Nigeria.
By creating opportunities for young people to develop skills, get physically active, give service and experience adventure, the Award can play a critical role in their development outside of the classroom. It also allows their achievement to be consistently recognized worldwide, giving young people unique international accreditation of their experiences.
The Award improves behaviour, attitude, social skills and self-esteem in a young person. Over time, they build confidence; dedication and commitment attributes that will get the through school, life and help them to be successful in the workplace.
Given CIS’ vision which in other words is to raise transformative global citizens, the DofE Award is a programme that has been tailored into the school’s curriculum to equip its students with the life-long skills they require to live a balanced and impactful life, beneficial not only to themselves but to the world at large.
